Playstation 2

It's the quality games and excellent joypad that makes PlayStation 2 really good. Fortunately the PS2 has kept the same Joypad (+ all analogue instead of digital buttons!) and updates of our favourite games such as FIFA and Grand Turismo.

Graphically its very much better in every respect to the old one, having 32 Mb of RAM, a 128-bit running at 300 MHz and a 150 MHz Sony graphics chip that can do about 66 million polygon per second.

The PlayStation 2 is NOT as fast as a PC tested against a Geforce 2 Ultra and AMD 1.4 GHz on the first person shooter Red Faction.

Grand Turismo looks and plays even better. The FIFA game too looks good, but again the PC version looks graphically better which brings the PlayStation 2 into perspective. Other footy games include 'This is Football' which is graphically better but Pro Evolution Soccer exceeds in game play. PES4 is the new version coming out and is definitely the leading football game around at the moment - it is certainly my choice to buy.

The PS2 also plays DVD films and is well worth the original £200 asking price if you don't already own a standard DVD player.

For 3 years after its release, it was THE console to buy. But along came Microsoft's first console, the Xbox, which looked like the fastest and best quality console to come out. Then came Nintendo's new console the GameCube which has also changed many people's perspective on what to buy.

A silver version came out earlier in the year, also a new 'slim' PS2 which is 75% smaller, will be available before Christmas. The PS3 will be available for purchase around early 2006.

Xbox

Microsoft's first serious games-only solution claims to blow away the Sony Playstation 2 and was released for under £300. The Xbox always had a good chance of competing as it has better graphics provided by nVidia famous for its GeForce graphics cards sold for PCs. The Sega Dreamcast was the first console to feature PC-like components and PC code-like OS system and an old PowerVR graphics as used by a few people years ago.

The Xbox runs at 733 MHz, which is twice the speed of the PlayStation's graphics and aims to do 150 to 200 million polygons per sec compared to 66 million or so that the Playstation 2 can realistically do. The Xbox also has DVD playback if you buy the additional unit and should include at least a 6 Gb hard drive to speed things up.

Microsoft also claim that 60% of the games will be made by themselves which is relatively high, and although it may help them in dominating the world, Microsoft do not make the best games for the PC, but companies like Electronic Arts do! There are a lot of on-going costs associated with the Xbox, including game prices and the dvd function explained above. Also the games are not as good as we would have liked, apart from Halo.

Plans for the Xbox 2 have been drawn up by Microsoft. Where they hope to increase online gaming following the huge inroads that the PC has made. In 2004 the Xbox Crystal was introduced (pictured), which has the same interior. The Xbox 2 is set for a possible release in late-2005.

GameCube

Instead of going for the highest possible performance, which acording to Nintendo does not contribute to software development, their idea was to create a developer-friendly next generation TV game machine that maintained above-standard capabilities.

In order to accomplish this, Nintendo have removed the 'bottlenecks' which hinder an efficient system. they have introduced 1T-RAM technology, which has a minimum of delays, into the main memory and the Graphics LSI Mixed Memory. Also, secondary cache memory with a large capacity was implemented in the MPU. With this combination they have succeeded at creating reliable functionality that can be used with actual games.

The GameCube's 8cm Disc medium will allow games makers to create a longer game experience with enhanced cut scenes. The programmers seem extremely happy with GameCube, reaffirming that the system is "attractive" for developers.

The controller has been heralded as the most ergonomically designed peripheral ever held. For some forthcoming games you can even use the GameBoy Advance as a controller, while the GBA's screen can be used to present extra features and information in the palm of your hand! GameCube's sequel, the Revolution looks to be released sometime in 2006, behind Xbox 2 and PS3.

Game Boy

The GameBoy Advance is fast and fun. The 2.9" TFT reflective colour screen is far better than the original GameBoy and there is also a great choice of games. They've mixed the old classic Nintendo games, such as Super Mario with the new, like Pokémon and 'Advance' series of games including the excellent Advance Wars.

One downside to the console is that the screen needs a lot of light to be clearly visible. Accessories have been created to counter this problem, but it comes at a cost. But without much competition from rival companies this console clinches the majority of hand-held console fans. In March 2003 this problem was solved when Nintendo released the GameBoy Advance SP (SP meaning SPecial), a foldable version, which features a front light integrated with the LCD screen that can be turned on and off during play. Its size is a mere 82mm wide, 84.6mm high and 24.3mm in depth, and is powered by a rechargable lithium-ion battery which gives at least 10 hours of life when using the light continuously. It was created to support the original GBA and NOT replace it.

The system is on par with the SNES in terms of processor speed which is impressive when considering the size of it. The GBA is powered by 2 AA batteries which lasts for roughly 6 hours playing time. Another good advantage of the Game Boy Advance is that you can play your old Game Boy and GameBoy Colour games aswell.
