Broadband Television
Broadband-Television.com allows you to watch live and
on-demand broadband television webcasts on your computer. You can also enjoy CD
quality music as your surf the web. To experience high quality streaming media,
you will require:
-> A high speed internet connection ->
Streaming audio/video software (available free) -> Multimedia speakers or
earphones
Your high speed internet connection (i.e. broadband) could be
ADSL, a cable internet connection or an ISDN, T1 or T3 line. High speed
internet connection will result in high quality audio/video. Other factors
affecting quality include your processor type and speed, amount of RAM and
video card.
Broadband Connection
There are two main types
of broadband Internet access available for residential customers today: digital
subscriber lines (DSL), which uses existing telephone lines, and cable
connections provided by cable TV companies.
The cable modem's
"first-to-market" position has given it the early lead among high speed
Internet technologies and presently accounts for nearly 50% of high speed
Internet customers. DSL, however, has made strong strides and is expected to
account for 40 percent of the residential high-speed Internet market in five
years. A number of new broadband technologies are also becoming
available.
Cable Internet Access
High speed cable Internet
access is available using a cable modem and a connection to the Internet
through a coaxial cable. The coaxial cable is often the same line that carries
your cable TV service. Like ADSL, high speed cable Internet access is an
"always-on" connection. This means that you don't have to dial-up each time you
want to check your mail or surf the net. High speed cable Internet access is
designed to deliver high quality streaming media on your
computer.
DSL Internet Access
DSL technology uses existing
telephone lines for multimedia and high-speed data communications. DSL can
transmit at very high speeds over a relatively short distance. Because DSL is
"always on" there is no need to dial-up service several times a day. DSL is
available throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. A variety of
service speeds and options are available from hundreds of service
providers.
Required Software
The most widely used
streaming audio/video software today is RealPlayer from RealNetworks. Its main
competitor is Microsoft's Media Player. Both packages are available free and
can be downloaded by clicking on the links below. In addition to a free
version, RealNetworks also offers a more sophisticated package that can be
purchased at a nominal charge.
We recommend that you download and
install both RealPlayer and Media Player. Because streaming media technology is
improving so rapidly, we also suggest that you ensure that the version of the
streaming media software you are using is the most current. Software updates
can be download free and easily installed by following the simple instructions
provided by the two vendors.
