Tiscali broadband & tiscali TV for £14.99
On the 1st March 2007, Tiscali will commence the national roll out of Tiscali TV in the UK. The launch of Tiscali TV follows the acquisition of the Homechoice IPTV service back in August 2006 and allows Tiscali to add further value to it's existing, highly competitive broadband and telephone bundles. When Tiscali TV goes live, over 40,000 existing Homechoice subscribers will become Tiscali TV customers and immediately benefit from the new competitive offer of broadband plus TV for £14.99.
At the moment, Tiscali TV is only available to customers in London and Stevenage but will become available to areas such as Birmingham, Edinburgh and Newcastle in the months following launch, extending to Leeds, Sheffield and Liverpool later in the year.
Tiscali TV offers over 30 digital TV channels and will be free to all 2Mb broadband subscribers in Tiscali TV enabled areas. Via Tiscali TV, users will also be able to access over 1000 movies on demand.
Tiscali's 'triple play' package will be priced at £19.99 and will include 2Mb broadband, the TV pack, line rental and free weekend telephone calls.
Mary Turner, Chief Executive Tiscali UK says: "Tiscali TV will give our subscribers real value for money, choice and flexibility - things that are core to our brand values. We believe there is a real gap in the market for our TV product. The success of Freeview has shown that customers want more than five channels but don't necessarily want to pay a high monthly subscription. Our TV service gives customers broadband plus the channel choice they want and free on-demand programming, all for the price you would pay for a standard broadband connection".

Broadband is cheaper than dial-up Internet access
According to analysis carried out by SimplySwitch.com (a price comparison service), broadband prices are now lower than those for dial-up Internet access. Dial-up Internet access has been effectively priced out of the market by the flood of Internet users taking up faster and more convenient broadband services. Currently over 40% of UK households connect to the Internet via broadband and it's no wonder, considering that 8Mb broadband access is 143 times faster than 56 Kbps dial-up, allowing users to download larger files, to watch streamed videos online and access a whole new Internet experience.
Based on a survey conducted by Google during March 2006, the average Briton now spends two and a half hours online each day. Based on this data, SimplySwitch.com calculated that if a user were paying for their Internet access via pay-per-minute dial-up, they would save money by switching to broadband. Similarly, for someone paying a flat rate for unlimited dial-up Internet access, in most cases a cheaper broadband alternative would be available, often with inclusive free telephone calls bundled with the broadband package. For example, a Tiscali dial-up customer paying £14.99 per month could save £33 per annum by transferring to the Tiscali 1Mb broadband service for £9.99 per month (first three months, then £12.99), along with free weekend calls. Savings were also shown with equivalent services from AOL and NTL / Telewest.
Karen Darby, founder of SimplySwitch.com, comments: "The advantages of switching from dial-up to broadband are obvious. With an 8Mb connection, broadband is 143 times faster than dial-up*. You can download far larger files, watch videos online, use a wireless connection and you’ll even save money as well. Anyone who ditches dial-up will see a vast improvement to their online experience.
"One of the major barriers to switching is that many people still believe broadband requires the installation of extra cables. This is not the case as 99.8% of UK households have ready access to broadband through their existing telephone landline**. Basically, if you currently have a home telephone, and don’t live in an isolated area, you should have access to broadband. Unlike when changing broadband suppliers, you won’t need a MAC (Migration Authority Code) to switch from dial-up to broadband and, if you use a service like SimplySwitch, the whole process is free and takes less than five minutes.”

Consumers predict the end of traditional TV
Tiscali TV Trends Report 2007 reveals consumer hunger for TV freedom
British consumers will be trading in the traditional broadcast model of TV scheduling in favour of on-demand TV over their broadband connection, according to new, independent research commissioned by Tiscali, the broadband and media company.
The Tiscali TV Trends Report 2007 reveals that despite not knowing what the term 'IPTV' means, 63% of UK adults would prefer to watch on-demand programmes on their TV sets, via their broadband connection.
Brits want TV freedom
Such is the British population's confidence that broadband delivered television on-demand is the way forward that 42% believe today's traditional television schedules will be a thing of the past in ten years' time. The research shows that choice is key and will have a significant impact on who succeeds. A further one in four people believe that the big commercial broadcasters, like ITV, will be struggling to survive amidst a myriad of small, fast-moving independents who can give consumers what they want, when they want it.
However, the choice and lifestyle freedom that on-demand television provides will not turn Britain into a nation of square-eyed couch potatoes. 42% of those who view on-demand content actually watch less TV as a result, and a further 41% watch about the same amount. The implications for television advertisers are significant and broadcast campaign planners will have to become much more specific in their targeting.
Sport alone is not enough
Remarkably, almost one in five (17%) of UK adults have already downloaded content on-demand to their television sets and the good news for employers is the majority (97%) are viewing this content at home and not on a work PC. The remaining 83% said that movies on demand were the most compelling reason to try out a broadband television service (71%) followed by TV shows or soaps (49%) and sports (32%).
Being able to watch the right movie at the right time is so important to British consumers that more than half (51%) would prefer to rent a movie by downloading it through their broadband connection rather than go to a video rental store.
Londoners shown to be early adopters
28% of Londoners watch on-demand content via their internet connection making them the UK's early adopters, in sharp contrast to Wales and Northern Ireland where just 12% of people have viewed on-demand content via their internet connection. When it comes to the battle of the sexes, men are watching the most on-demand content via broadband - 21% compared with 16% of all women.
Tiscali, which bought Video Networks International Ltd earlier this year, conducted the research as part of its preparation for its TV product rollout in early 2007.
Neal McCleave, managing director of media services for Tiscali UK says, "There is obviously a big demand already among British consumers for the freedom and choice IPTV will give them, even if they don't know the jargon yet. Conventional broadcasters should heed the warning and will need to adapt significantly in the coming years to retain their market share.
"IPTV will create a whole new force in broadcast and digital entertainment distribution and Tiscali's TV service will be the broadest and most flexible. It's all about choice."
"The good news for consumers is that with all the extra choice and freedom, we're not all going to become couch potatoes. While the growing adoption of IPTV may mean we watch less TV overall, the time we spend in front of the box will be of a higher quality."
Research methodologyThe survey commissioned by Tiscali was conducted by research specialist Tickbox.net and polled a representative sample of 1,465 adults in the UK.Labels: broadband-IPTV, tiscali-broadband

Tiscali signs deal with Inspired Broadcast Networks to provide broadband over LLU network
Tiscali, the internet and broadband company, has signed a two-year deal with open-server based gaming, betting and entertainment company, Inspired Broadcast Networks (Inspired). Inspired will provide a broadband connection over Tiscali's Local Loop Unbundled (LLU) network to over 90,000 digital entertainment terminals to keep them regularly updated with the latest content, including games, music downloads and a range of other digital services.
Nathan Francis, general manager for Tiscali Business Services says: "We are delighted that yet another business is taking advantage of our LLU network to deliver cost savings to its customers. The new partnership really helps to cement Tiscali as a leader in wholesale LLU." Tiscali began its investment in LLU in 2005 and is currently rolling out its LLU network, with a target of 600 exchanges nationally by the end of 2006.
Connections to the Tiscali network will run over two links in two different sites, providing a more robust service and better experience for Inspired's customers.
Norman Crowley, joint CEO at Inspired, says: "As the global leader in Server-Based Gaming we require the most sophisticated broadband service to supply our clients. Tiscali is a fast-moving, innovative company which has a very similar outlook to us here at Inspired. When we decided to take advantage of LLU and move away from BT, we looked at a number of potential partners but felt Tiscali was best suited to fulfil our needs."
As well as proving a more cost-effective network, the Tiscali deal will also be allowing Inspired to build a data recovery facility within Tiscali's Milton Keynes data centre.

Tiscali and Video Networks: integration in the UK market
Tiscali and Video Networks International Ltd announce today that they have reached an agreement whereby their respective UK market operations would be fully integrated.
Pursuant to this agreement, Video Networks International Ltd (VNIL) would contribute 100% of their UK operations - Video Networks Ltd (VNL) - into Tiscali UK Ltd, fully owned subsidiary of Tiscali SpA, in exchange for an interest in Tiscali UK. As a result, Tiscali SpA would control 88.5% of Tiscali UK, while VNIL would own 11.5%. The agreement is expected to become effective in August 2006, upon fulfillment of certain technical conditions. Furthermore, the shareholding of VNIL in Tiscali UK could be increased to up to 20% if certain performance targets are reached. Tax losses carried forward would also be contributed to Tiscali UK by VNIL at a discount and payable on a deferred basis and according to their expected utilisation in the future. Tiscali SpA has the right to acquire and VNIL to sell VNIL's stake in Tiscali UK starting from three years after closing or earlier upon certain trigger events.
Following this integration, Tiscali UK will immediately have more than 1.3 million DSL customers, of which 350,000 customers are taking voice and broadband, over 45,000 will be IPTV subscribers, and an unbundled local loop ("ULL") network covering over 300 BT exchanges with in excess of 220,000 ULL customers.
Video Networks currently provides TV and video services under its Homechoice brand, to its broadband subscriber base using its state of the art IPTV platform. Homechoice has 45,000 customers, mostly taking triple play (broadband, telephone and TV) which pay on average £500 a year. VNL has an annualised turnover of approximately £18 million.
Homechoice's premium offering includes content from all the major Hollywood studios delivering a library of over 1,000 movies, over 5,000 interactive music videos via the award-winning V:MX service as well as a full bouquet of pay TV channels.
Tiscali UK will market these IPTV services as part of a compelling product proposition including voice, data, television (IPTV) and other on-demand video services. Tiscali UK's strategy will also be to enhance its current wholesale DSL product by adding IPTV to the proposition and syndicating this on a 'white label' basis.
"This agreement represents a very important step for the Tiscali Group not only in the UK market, where Tiscali's position would be further strengthened, but also in the other markets, allowing Tiscali to position itself as a true Triple Play operator. The Triple Play offer in the UK will be launched by the end of the year and will be immediately followed by the launch of the service in Italy and then in the other markets." says Tommaso Pompei, CEO of the Tiscali Group.
Mary Turner, CEO of Tiscali UK says: "This agreement further underlines Tiscali's position as a leading investor and innovator in the UK market. This will put us in a strong position to offer our customers an exciting and compelling package of existing and next generation communication and entertainment services."
Roger Lynch, Chairman and CEO of VNL who will head the syndication business and join the board of directors of Tiscali UK following completion of the transaction, says: "This agreement will allow many more consumers nationally to experience VNL's market-leading IPTV offer as part of a compelling triple play bundle of services. It also gives significant additional capabilities to develop and promote the growing IPTV syndication business in the UK and abroad, which will be an important growth driver."

This experimental web casting agreement is valid in each European country that Tiscali will be interested in operating in and represents a new opportunity in preserving music digital contents,” commented Gianluigi Chiodaroli, President of SCF.
