Top five ADSL broadband providers

Orange has re-entered the top five ADSL broadband providers in the UK,
joining BT broadband, Pipex broadband, Demon broadband and Virgin.net broadband at the top of the table in terms of technical broadband performance.

The fourth quarter Internet Performance Indicator (IPI) Report from Epitiro – the UK’s leading Customer Experience Management (CEM) provider for Internet access services – identifies BT as the best performing broadband provider. BT have held the top position for the last three quarters.

Epitiro’s customer experience monitoring and competitor benchmarking service, monitored the services from the ten largest competing consumer ADSL broadband providers, collecting 622,147 real-time data samples from eleven locations around the UK. This means that from 1st October to 31st December 2006, each broadband service was tested over 60,000 times on average.

“Our testing has shown that in terms of technical performance, BT and Pipex are still maintaining their position in the top five,” said Gavin Johns, Managing Director of Epitiro.

Overall Ranking - Q4 2006
1 - BT broadband
2 - Pipex broadband
3 - Orange broadband
4 - Demon broadband
5 - Virgin broadband

Increasing Speed Through 2006

Epitiro’s research has found that the industry average connection and HTTP download (web browsing) speeds have increased steadily through 2006, with the average consumer ADSL connection speed for the fourth quarter at 5.73 Mbps per second.

“ISPs are increasing their speeds, which is good news for bandwidth-hungry users,” said Epitiro’s Gavin Johns. “Speeds have increased from 3.82 Mbps per second in the third quarter due to new ADSL Max entrants into the ten largest broadband providers. However it’s unlikely that many ADSL Max services will perform at their full capacity of 8Mbps. The speed of broadband service reduces the further the customer’s connection is from their local telephone exchange.”

Individual Category Rankings

Epitiro’s Consumer ADSL IPI Report measures ten performance metrics, averaging performance in each to compile the top five rankings. Plusnet achieved the highest connection speed for the second quarter running. BT offered the fastest HTTP download speed, which normally reflects the speed of general web browsing. BT also provided the fastest FTP downloads from users’ personal webspace. Pipex
provided the fastest FTP upload speed. As well as upload and download connection speeds, ISP-I measures connection reliability and time to connect to ensure the full customer experience is captured.

“A broadband connection isn’t just about speed,” explained Gavin Johns. “The
connection has to be available when you need it and, with the growth of VoIP, Internet gaming and videoconferencing, it has to be able to deal with lots of different online activities.”

Virgin’s services had the lowest packet loss rate. All ISPs experience some packet loss, but a high rate of loss can lead to problems streaming video and audio. Interestingly, the percentage of packet loss - whilst remaining low - more than doubled in the past quarter. Virgin also had the lowest percentage of connection failures in Q4, suggesting that their consumer ADSL customers had the highest degree of uptime of the sample group. Orange broadband provided the fastest ping time, generally desirable to users that require frequent data updates from the Internet back to their computer, such as online gamers.

Pipex Wireless to trial new WiMAX

Working with National Grid Wireless, Intel® Solutions Services and Warwick District Council, Pipex Wireless launches second commercial trial. Pipex Wireless is to launch a second commercial trial of its WiMAX services, working with National Grid Wireless, Warwick District Council and Intel® Solutions Services. The trial will involve three sites in the Leamington Spa and Warwick area, and will deliver products including, leased line replacement, voice over IP, home workers broadband and dedicated broadband connectivity using WiMAX.

As the UK’s first wireless solutions provider to launch WiMAX services - with Milton Keynes currently being implemented - Pipex Wireless intends to initially deliver trial services to Warwick District Council and subsequently approach businesses and home-users in the Warwick area. The trial network will be commissioned in Q2/07 and the trial will run for six months. Other towns and cities are planned for deployment later in 2007.

High-speed broadband will be delivered over Airspan’s HiperMAX WiMAX base stations, one of which will be located on the National Grid Wireless’ headquarters in southern Warwick. Intel Solutions Services is working with the council providing support for the introduction of wireless and other technologies, and evaluating performance.

Chris Elliott, Chief Executive, Warwick District Council, comments, “Attracting the latest wireless broadband and voice services to the area is great news. We are looking to make the District a technologically advanced area to live and do business in. Working with Pipex Wireless on this trial and beyond is a vitally important step to achieve this aim.”

Stephen Marshall, CEO National Grid Wireless, says, “We are pleased to be working with both Warwick District Council and Pipex Wireless to deliver WiMAX services in our home town. Our business is founded on the delivery of infrastructure and managed service solutions to the wireless and broadcast industry and we believe the roll out of wireless broadband networks will be complementary to the wide range of technologies already deployed by our organisation.”

Mike Read, CEO, Pipex Wireless, adds, “Following the initial success of our Milton Keynes trial, we are delighted to expand our WiMAX services into new towns and cities in the UK. Working with National Grid Wireless and Warwick District Council further develops our wireless capability and we are looking forward to more organisations, businesses and consumers using WiMAX.”

Milton Keynes takes first steps to WiMAX broadband

Pipex Wireless has become the first service provider to offer secure wireless broadband using WiMAX in the UK, with the successful delivery of WiMAX services into Milton Keynes. Currently in the pilot phase of the rollout, the first trial customers have successfully been connected to the WiMAX network in Milton Keynes.

WiMAX technology will help make Milton Keynes one of the UK’s most connected new cities, enabling both businesses and residents to access broadband and IP-based services over multiple local networks and technologies. Pipex Wireless and Milton Keynes Council have signed an agreement to work closely together to ensure that the trial succeeds in achieving its objectives. Activities to identify additional infrastructure to offer wider commercial services during 2007 have already begun.

With no customer-based, fixed infrastructure required, Pipex Wireless’ WiMAX service enables broadband to be rapidly installed at customers’ premises or homes and via hotspots around the town. Offering increased symmetrical broadband delivery, WiMAX is ideal for remote workers and users who need to send large volumes of data, such as architects, graphic designers, web managers and new media agencies.

Steven Jewell Head of IT at Milton Keynes says, “We expect, the capability that WiMAX will be able to provide to remote and home workers will be an essential element in the established growth plans for Milton Keynes.”

“We’re delighted to get Milton Keynes’ residents and businesses working on WiMAX broadband,” says Mike Read, Chief Executive Officer, Pipex Wireless. “Our WiMAX service offers a secure, highly flexible platform for broadband and voice services, which we aim to rollout further around the town in 2007. By working with Milton Keynes Council and our other technology partners, including Airspan and Ericsson, we have the ability to make hooking up to a wireless world a reality.”

Jewell continues, “Milton Keynes is a thriving, forward-thinking town, with thousands of businesses and residents looking to be at the forefront of communications technologies. With Pipex Wireless, we are building a model of public and private cooperation for an economic, sustainable wireless development that will be just as beneficial to many other public authorities in the UK. This is a significant building block towards delivering ‘digital’ Milton Keynes and is an integral part of the Milton Keynes Digital Challenge bid.”

Pipex Wireless was created in April 2006 by Pipex and Intel Capital, Intel Corporation’s venture arm, to develop unique fixed and portable broadband wireless services for consumers and business customers in the UK. Milton Keynes was chosen to be the first town as its telecoms network has a relatively high proportion of poor quality and long reach copper wires, thereby limiting the potential for residents and businesses to access ADSL broadband services.

Pipex aims to get Hasselhoff to number one

Following the success of the advertising campaign for broadband provider Pipex, David Hasselhoff returns to the UK for a new project - the release of his latest single ‘Jump In My Car’.

Pipex, the multiple award-winning provider of integrated telecommunications and internet services, is delighted at how their recent ‘Powered by Pipex’ campaign has boosted David Hasselhoff’s popularity in the UK. Since Pipex signed him to become the face of their new marketing campaign for 2006/7, interest in the 'Jump In My Car' track has skyrocketed, gathering an army of fans around the country. Pipex has now bowed to the pressure from fans to release the single in the UK, as part of a newly funded venture entitled Skintight Recordings.

Peter Dubens, Chairman of Pipex said, “David needed no encouragement when we approached him about the release of ‘Jump in My Car’. He is delighted that fans liked the Pipex advert and said he’d love to release ‘Jump in my car’ in the UK.”

In a survey commissioned by Pipex earlier this year, Hasselhoff was voted "King of the Internet". The survey found that he was the cult star most searched for on the Internet. The survey also revealed that ‘The Hoff’ is the male star most likely to feature in emails - with 30% of young people emailing ‘The Hoff’ to friends, family and colleagues.

The new single ‘Jump in My Car’ is set for release on Skintight Records in early October, and was premiered exclusively on Radio One by DJ Scott Mills.

About David Hasselhoff

David Hasselhoff has one of the most recognised faces on TV throughout the world. David is not only an actor, but a producer, director, singer and broadway star. David first got the acting bug at the age of seven, when he took up singing and acting lessons.

David originally intended to forge a career on the stage, however, he was offered a part on TV as ‘Dr. Snapper Foster’ on the CBS programme ‘The Young and The Restless’. He starred on the programme for six years, becoming one of the most popular day-time television stars, which itself led to a huge fan following.

The desire to move up to prime time led David to take on the role of Michael Knight in the award winning, ‘Knight Rider’. During his four years here, David earned The People’s Choice Award for most popular actor. ‘Knight Rider’ ended in 1986, but its popularity continues, and the show still airs repeats in over 80 counties around the world.

The ending of the show meant that David could concentrate pursuing a singing career and, with the help of Jack White, an acclaimed German composer and producer, he recorded his first single, ‘Looking for Freedom’.

The success of ‘Knight Rider’, both internationally and nationally, made him the ideal choice for the producers of new series ‘Baywatch’, which first aired in 1989. The hour long series was about the adventures of L.A. lifeguards but, despite its popularity, the show was cancelled after only one series. Determined to make it work Hasselhoff managed to get the rights to the show and, with a little financial funding, brought the show back in 1991.

Since then David has involved himself with almost every aspect of performing, not only acting on television, but producing, directing, performing in musicals on and off Broadway, singing, touring and, given his popularity as a singer in Germany, he even performed on the Berlin Wall in 1989.

Pipex Wireless’ first WiMAX deployment

Pipex Wireless (www.pipexwireless.com), a joint venture between Pipex Communications plc (AIM:PXC.L) and Intel Corporation focused on developing and providing wireless services, has announced that it is to deploy a trial WiMAX network in Milton Keynes. Base station equipment and subscriber terminals will be provided by wireless solutions provider Airspan Networks (NASDAQ: AIRN) and Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) will build and operate the radio network and required roof-top infrastructure.

The trial has been designed and planned in close cooperation with Milton Keynes Council, which already has an existing broadband supply relationship with Pipex. Trial base stations will be sited in areas of the town to evaluate WiMAX product propositions to both business and residential customers and to provide coverage where DSL broadband provision is currently limited or unavailable. The trial will commence in December 2006 and continue for six months, and if successful, will be extended to provide wider coverage across Milton Keynes.

Pipex Wireless will initially deploy five Airspan HiperMAX-Micro base stations and provide services using indoor and outdoor subscriber terminals, both with integrated WiFi available. Working with Milton Keynes Council, Pipex Wireless will initially offer the trial to approximately 500 users, providing connection speeds of between 2Mbps and 10Mbps. Currently, due to its telecoms infrastructure, many Milton Keynes residents either have a limited broadband service or are unable to get broadband Internet connections. The trial service offers faster connection speeds and the ability to send, as well as receive, high volumes of data. Further details of the service proposition will be provided in a release closer to the launch date.

“WiMAX is an exciting opportunity for Pipex and we’re delighted that we are now able to trial the technology in a customer environment,” said Mike Read, CEO of Pipex. “This will be the first such trial in the UK and positions Pipex Wireless as the lead WiMAX provider in the market.”

Milton Keynes Council Head of IT and e-Government, Steven Jewell added, “We are pleased to have attracted Pipex Wireless to trial WiMAX in Milton Keynes. This reflects our continuing commitment to the digital economy in our town and to improving broadband provision.”

Jacqueline Hey, Managing Director of Ericsson’s North West Europe Market Unit said, “We are delighted that our company has been selected to engineer the Milton Keynes WiMAX network with Pipex Wireless. Ericsson has extensive global experience of wireless deployment using multiple vendor and technology platforms and our recent success in outsourcing makes us an ideal operating partner as Pipex Wireless builds its own capabilities.”

Airspan's Marketing and Product Vice President, Paul Senior, commented, "It’s early days for WiMAX in the UK, but we’re excited with the progress so far. The combination of range and throughput demonstrated at the Stratford-upon-Avon trial site has helped Pipex Wireless’s readiness for customer operations. The deployment of the future proof HiperMAX-Micro platform with integrated WiMAX/WiFi in Milton Keynes demonstrates our continuing commitment to help Pipex develop a robust WiMAX deployment model."

Pipex Wireless was created in April 2006 by Pipex and Intel Capital, Intel Corporation’s venture arm, to develop unique fixed and portable broadband wireless services for consumers and business customers in the UK. The company intends to announce roll out of new services in several major metro areas in 2007.

Pipex increases capacity to 20Gb with the London Internet Exchange

Pipex Network Services is making major enhancements to high speed Internet connectivity with two new 10Gb Ethernet ports into the London Internet Exchange (LINX). The performance-boosting connections enable Pipex to route traffic to other service providers more quickly and cost-effectively through the London-based Internet hub, reinforcing its capabilities to offer customers reliable, high performance Internet services.

As a longstanding member of LINX – one of the world's largest neutral peering points – this increased capacity will enable Pipex to reduce its costs for carrying traffic and ensure that services are always available for customers. Pipex has made this investment due to more businesses and home-users joining its services and a greater demand for bandwidth from customers.

Pipex recently came top of the five largest ADSL suppliers in a nation-wide customer satisfaction survey carried out by uSwitch.com and YouGov. 80 per cent of Pipex customers were satisfied with their speed/usage, while 89 per cent were satisfied with the quality of the Pipex connection.

“The investment in the 20Gb connections with LINX is an important step towards building an Internet infrastructure that is truly equipped for triple play – offering voice, data and television over a single connection,” says Maria Cappella, managing director, Pipex Network Services. “Customers are becoming more demanding for Internet connectivity and bandwidth, and investments such as these help to ensure entertainment- and business continuity.”

“At a time when many ISPs are talking more about price than service delivery, it’s encouraging to see forward thinking companies like Pipex continuing to invest in high speed connectivity,” says John Souter, CEO at LINX. “We would urge other service providers to follow Pipex’s lead as further investments increase the quality of Internet connectivity for everyone involved.”

PIPEX tops the big five ADSL suppliers in latest research

PIPEX has topped the chart amongst the big five ADSL broadband suppliers in a nation-wide survey carried out by price comparison website uSwitch.com and YouGov. PIPEX beat the four largest ADSL suppliers BT, Tiscali, AOL and Wanadoo, as well as cable operator ntl, in the research measuring customer satisfaction.

The survey asked 16,000 broadband users to assess their supplier for aspects such as customer service, technical support, connection speed, value for money and whether they would recommend to a friend.

The results showed that 95 per cent of PIPEX customers would consider recommending the service to a friend – with 42 per cent saying they would “definitely” recommend. Meanwhile, 80 per cent of PIPEX customers were satisfied with their speed/usage and payment plans, while 89 per cent were satisfied with the quality of the PIPEX connection.

According to PIPEX’s CEO Mike Read, the survey highlights that there’s more to the broadband market than price alone: “A few of the smaller suppliers have gone for headline-grabbing deals recently. But at the end of the day customers don’t want the hassle of having to keep switching providers, they just want value for money and good customer service.

“We’re pleased with the results of the survey, but we know there’s still a lot of work to do, particularly as the market evolves to become more about communications and entertainment, including voice and video services into the overall package,” he adds.
