Be wins ISPA Award - the internet BAFTAs
Be, the ultra fast broadband provider, was crowned ‘Best Sumo Consumer Broadband’ ISP at last nights ISPA Awards - the internet event of the year. Staged at the Marriot Hotel in London, Be picked up the award for the ISP which provides the best over 2MB broadband service to consumers.
"We are delighted to receive this award in our launch year and it certainly makes the hard work worthwhile," said Boris Ivanovic, Be Co-founder and Director. "We still have a lot to do and are busy with our national expansion plans. Manchester and Birmingham will be the first cities outside of London to benefit from Be‘s award-winning service."
Since launching last summer, Be has continually raised the bar for the UK broadband market by offering the latest technology, which allows the fastest broadband speeds currently available, at highly competitive prices. Starting from just £14 per month and every member receiving a free ‘Be Box’ wireless router, Be have the most competitive broadband products in the UK.
"The judges felt that Be Unlimited were pushing the broadband boundaries by offering consumers an innovative service through ADSL 2+ technology which aims to reach speeds of up to 24MB," said an ISPA spokesperson. "Be Unlimited delivers great higher speeds to its users and was felt to be an interesting challenger to the big boys."
The ISPA Awards are renowned for their independence and research partner Epitiro spent three months testing all of the entrant’s services. Epitiro’s ISP-I ("eyespy") system compares ISP performance from a variety of sites across the UK, external to each providers network. ISP-I constantly monitors performance by continually connecting to each ISP, every 15-30 minutes, and capturing performance metrics such as time to connect, connection speed, upload, download speed, ping time, DNS look-up time and e-mail.

BT help secure customers against identity theft
BT has launched two new services that provide practical online and offline support and advice for BT Broadband customers on preventing, detecting and resolving identity theft. BT Identity Support, which will now come as standard with BT Broadband options 2, 3 and 4, offers advice on how to reduce the chances of becoming a victim when online or offline, recognises the warning signs of identity theft and gets help and support from the BT Identity Advice Line . The professional advisors at the BT Identity Advice Line are also able to support victims of identity theft in resolving their case, including providing letter templates to help resolve issues with creditors.
The second new service is BT Identity Protection, one of the most comprehensive online insurance and advice packages available today. Customers choosing to take out the policy, which costs from £44.992, are covered for up to £50,000 for the cost of restoring their identity, and receive a personal caseworker, passport and driving license replacement cover. The service also provides credit monitoring so BT can let customers know if it believes someone is trying to steal their identity. Meanwhile, BT has also launched BT Digital Vault, a secure online storage service for any content on a customer’s home computer. If a PC hard disk crashes – perhaps as a result of one of the 100,000 known computer viruses - or if a computer is stolen, Digital Vault ensures that important personal content is not lost – as BT will back-up the data for the customer5.
Gavin Patterson, Group Managing Director Consumer, BT, said: “Identity theft has become a very real threat to all internet users. One in four people in the UK has been a victim of it or knows someone who has3, and our research shows it’s currently costing the UK £1.7 billion each year4.
“It is increasingly important that customers are aware of the online security threats they may face and use the tools they are provided with to ensure they continue to have an enjoyable and safe internet experience. With our new security packages and services, we hope that customers can begin to feel safer and more confident when using their broadband connection,” Patterson concluded.
BT Broadband packages already include a range of security features, such as BT Yahoo! Mail Protection with Anti-Phishing to help protect against online fraud and ID theft, which is automatically updated as new threats emerge. And with BT Yahoo! parental controls, also standard with all BT Broadband packages, parents can have peace of mind that their children are safe as they surf the web.

Broadband to community pharmacies via Pipex
PIPEX has signed a major reseller partnership with Cegedim, the UK’s leading provider of pharmacy management systems, to roll out ADSL broadband in community pharmacies as part of the NHS’ New National Network, known as N3.
PIPEX has been selected as Cegedim’s partner of choice for N3 connectivity for its customers, firmly establishing PIPEX as the leading N3 aggregator in the UK. With almost 50 per cent market share for patient medication records (PMR) solutions, Cegedim is ideally placed to drive the installation of the Electronic Prescription Service (EPS), transported over a secure broadband connection.
“PIPEX already provides secure managed networks for many of the UK’s leading blue chip companies and public sector organisations – working with Cegedim takes us to the next level in the provision of broadband as part of the NHS’ national IT programme,” says Mike Read, CEO, PIPEX. “Through this new partnership, PIPEX is now placed as a leading service provider in the N3 aggregation marketplace.”
“We’re delighted to be working with PIPEX as part of the N3 project,” adds Simon Driver, Managing Director of Cegedim Rx. “Many pharmacies that we speak to have been concerned over how they will connect to N3, and by working with PIPEX, we’re positioned to be able to provide a total solution for electronic prescriptions. With EPS plans for pharmacists, it is vital that pharmacies have the compliant technology in place to enable them to deliver an effective service.“
N3 accreditation provides significant benefits to PIPEX resellers and systems providers, giving them the opportunity to tap into PIPEX’s proven expertise in bulk ordering and installation. The partnership with Cegedim follows the launch of PIPEX’s reseller programme Gokei - a major new channel programme to provide referrers, resellers, systems integrators and strategic partners with opportunities to increase their revenues by using PIPEX technologies.
The aim of N3 is to provide a fast, reliable network on which to run the new IT systems being delivered by the National Programme for IT. This will make the NHS the first major user of significant broadband capacity in the public sector. The network will also provide the technology to benefit patients by significantly speeding up the transfer of key clinical data between NHS organisations.

BT says UK internet users not doing enough to protect against online ID theft
BT today published a ten-point guide to help prevent internet users becoming victims of the growing threat of online identity theft.
The guide appears in an internet security report published today, written in conjunction with CPP, Get Safe Online, Lloyds TSB, Metropolitan Police and Yahoo! The report highlights the growth of online threats, the current situation and what the future holds.
For instance, 8% of UK PC users fall victim to online fraud and 15% know someone who has been targeted by an internet criminal. However, the report shows that customers are not taking appropriate, available steps to protect themselves - one in ten people questioned, for example, indicated that they would have no qualms about giving their credit card details to an unidentified third party.
“Online identity fraud is a growing and, until now, a silent part of fraud in the UK, which accounted for £1.7 billion last year - £35 per adult per year,” explained Ray Stanton, head of security at BT Global Services. “We want to make sure that people are aware of the threat and are protecting themselves online, so they can enjoy the benefits of the internet.”
“Criminals are always looking for new and easy ways to make money,” explained DCI Stuart Dark at the Metropolitan Police. “Online identity theft and fraud are the latest techniques. By protecting themselves against the growing threat, users are also protecting others, so we urge everyone who uses the internet to follow the ten point guide.”

UK businesses could save millions with BT Fusion
Businesses in the UK could save millions by using BT Fusion*, the new intelligent mobile service that offers the convenience of a mobile phone with the value of a BT Broadband connection and half-price calls** in the office.
BT Fusion today becomes available for the first time for businesses. Analysis from BT shows that UK businesses that enjoy the convenience of using their mobiles in the office no longer need to feel guilty about the cost, as they could save over £14 million a year in call charges with BT Fusion compared to existing business mobile tariffs*. Strategy Analytics research shows that 22% of mobile calls are made in the office.
The 27% of UK business mobile users on Pay-As-You-Use (PAYU) contracts stand to make the biggest savings. BT Fusion is cheaper than PAYU business mobile tariffs from all other UK mobile operators. For example, 300 minutes usage a month on BT Fusion would cost £200 less than O2 Business On-Line over 24 months***.
BT Fusion is ideal for businesses with ten employees or less. When out and about, it works just like a normal mobile phone with competitive mobile call rates. However, calls made in the office are routed over a business BT Broadband connection via a BT Hub. This gives customers 50% savings on mobile calls** in the office and great mobile reception.
Research from the Yankee Group shows that 68% of small businesses view cost and coverage as the two most important factors in choosing a mobile service provider.
Bill Murphy, managing director, BT Business, said: “BT achieved an important milestone in fixed-mobile convergence when we launched BT Fusion last year. Residential customers are already getting great value from their BT Fusion mobile calls and we are now making the cost and convenience benefits available to businesses too, starting with smaller businesses. BT Fusion gives businesses the freedom to use their mobiles how they want, allowing users to make calls on their mobiles from the office without worrying about the cost, and as it is enabled by BT Broadband they get even more benefits from their broadband connection.”
Businesses ordering before 31 March can get BT Fusion for just £6.25 a month per handset for the first three months, subject to a 24-month contract, with 50 inclusive anytime minutes****. Customers can choose a Motorola V560 at no extra charge or get the stylish Motorola RAZR V3B free of charge until the end of March. Three handsets can make cheaper calls** in the office over the BT Broadband connection at the same time, with calls on other handsets running over the BT Mobile network.
The BT Hub, which is available free of charge until 31 March 2006, can also be used to create a wireless network in the office, connecting PCs and printers to a BT broadband connection and each other without wires.
