Brits prefer online diagnosis (24/08/05)

Fed up with their local doctor’s waiting room, almost half the population (45%) use the Internet to find medical advice, according to PIPEX a leading broadband provider.

Whilst NHS waiting lists are falling, a quarter of all patients cannot book a doctors appointment three or more days in advance , and many are unable to get one at all. In light of this, PIPEX questioned 1,000 Brits about their attitudes towards researching their medical ailments online.

The findings reveal women to be their most likely to ‘ditch the doctor’ 51 per cent will do their own research online, compared with 40 per cent of men. Furthermore, the findings also show more Brits research their illnesses and ailments than shop online (38%) and download music (43%).

From shopping to researching medical ailments, more an more people are recognizing the benefits that high-speed Broadband Internet access can provide.

With more than one in two British homes now having access to the Internet; Broadband is widely expected to reach 8 million users, or 30 per cent of British households, by the end of 2005.
