National Statistics - broadband

20th July 2005: National Statistics
UK broadband access reaches 50.7%

In May 2005, the level of broadband Internet connections overtook dial-up Internet connections, according to data published today by the Office for National Statistics.

In January 2001, broadband connections made up only 0.8 per cent of all connections. They have grown steadily since then, reaching 5.7 per cent in May 2002, 16.4 per cent in May 2003 and 30 per cent in May 2004.

In May 2005, 50.7 per cent of connections were broadband, up from 49.2 per cent the previous month. Broadband connections grew by 77.7 per cent in the 12 months to May 2005.

By contrast, dial-up connections have been in decline for over three years. Dial up-connections peaked in February 2002, 14.3 per cent higher than when the index commenced in January 2001. Since that peak, dial-up connections have declined by 36.8 per cent, and by 26 per cent in the last 12 months.

The overall level of Internet connections has increased by 45.4 per cent since the index began in January 2001. During 2001, growth in Internet connections was largely driven by growth in dial-up connections. Since these began to decline in 2002, growth in the index has been driven by growth in broadband connections.
