Griffin Information
Services was formed in early 1993 as a software house and general IT services
company. Griffin quickly built up an enviable reputation, and Griffin built PCs
were the subject of many favourable reviews in the computer magazines of the
time.
During 1994, Griffin staff started experimenting with the
Internet and quickly realised that the number of people accessing the Internet
was set to rise dramatically. A major problem for Internet users at the time,
was the high call costs in addition to the monthly subscription. At the same
time cable companies were investing heavily in connecting up major towns and
cities to their network and tempting people to leave BT by offering free local
calls if customers took their TV and telephone service. However, the cable
companies had no Internet service to offer customers. Griffin saw an
opportunity to provide people with a cost effective service by partnering with
the cable TV companies to provide subscribers with free Internet calls.
So, in early 1995, Griffin started the process of designing and
building an ISP for the East Midlands. On 1st October 1995, Griffin launched
the UKs first un-metered dialup service to subscribers of Nynex Cable TV
in Derby. At the time, the service was built on 3 Linux servers, 6 incoming
lines and a 64Kbit/s leased line to the Internet, although rapid growth saw the
infrastructure grow dramatically in the months following the launch.
Since then Griffin have continued to innovate and has been behind many
Internet firsts, including being the first European company to broadcast live
music on the Internet and being the company behind the first Premier League
football commentary on the Internet.
Since those early days, Griffin
has experienced significant growth, both in customers and infrastructure. In
terms of customers, Griffin provides Internet access to over 28,000 subscribers
and provides wholesale services to over 200 ISPs and telcos. In terms of
infrastructure, Griffin now has four physical POPs, hundreds of megabits of
transit capacity and active peering relationships with most ISPs at LINX, MaNAP
and XchangePoint. Griffin continues to grow profitably, with very low churn
thanks to a sustainable business plan, good people and a quality network.
Broadband
Griffin Internet was one of the first Internet
Service Providers in the UK to ADSL Broadband services. We now provide a wide
range of services for wholesale, business and home users.
Our ADSL
services are available at speeds from 512Kbit/s to 2Mbit/s with contention
ratios of 50:1 (for services up to 1Mbit/s) or 20:1 for (services up to
2Mbit/s). As well as the ADSL and SDSL services that we currently provide, we
are also developing Wireless LAN HotSpot services.
L2TP
ADSL
The Griffin Internet Broadband Access Network is based around
multiple BT Central Pipes and supports the full range of IPStream services. The
user sessions from the Central Pipes are managed by the Griffin L2TP Tunnel
Switch (LTS) which grooms the traffic according to domain name. All user
sessions with the same domain name are then encapsulated in a single L2TP
tunnel and forwarded on to your own L2TP Network Server (LNS). It is only once
the session reaches your LNS that it is authenticated and allocated an IP
address, this puts complete control over your subscribers into your hands. It
also provides a completely transparent service; the Griffin network is entirely
invisible from your end-users.
The service is compatible with most
popular LNS devices, including Cisco, RedBack etc. If you dont already
have one of these devices on your network, then Griffin can sell or rent you
one at a competitive price.
As part of the service, you get access to
the Griffin Managed Online Provisioning Systems (MOPS). This allows you to
place and monitor end-user orders and produce reports via an easy to use web
interface or by using an XML interface to allow integration with your existing
systems.
