The Advance Group has
been created through a number of strategic acquisitions made since 1999. The
Initial purchase being that of the engineering and maintenance division of
Samsung Telecom UK Ltd. This division, known as "Service Direct", benefited
from over 25 years experience in maintaining telecommunication equipment and
had previously been owned by Ferranti Telecom, Securicor Telecom and eventually
Samsung.
Driving the groups acquisition program was the increasing
similarity between voice and Data services ‘Convergence’. With the
coming together of voice and data skills around products such as VoIP telephony
(Voice over Internet Protocol), it was clear that new combined software and
data engineering skills would need to be found.
As these combined
resources are generally harder to find, it seemed prudent to adopt a parallel
complementary strategy to acquire new skill sets through the purchase of other
"soft" telecommunication service providers such as ISP's. The first ISP
purchase was made in April 2000 with the addition of Zoo Internet, an
established, business ISP with over 5 years experience and a LINX (London
Internet Exchange) member. A year later in 2001 the company further bolstered
its data / IP capability with the purchase of Enterprise plc another long
established Internet Service Provider.
