18th July 2005: Nortel BT Selects Nortel Equipment for
Hosted Business Voice over IP
LONDON - BT has selected Nortel*
[NYSE/TSX: NT] to supply equipment for its range of hosted Business IP
(Internet Protocol) telephony services, which are designed to run across BT's
21st Century Network.
BT has placed orders for Nortel's Communication
Server (CS) 2000 carrier-class voice over IP call server solution, which will
enable delivery of an IP-based business voice solution hosted in BT's network
and aimed at supporting the communications needs of large public and private
sector organizations.
The Nortel solution will allow BT to manage the
communications needs of the most demanding UK organizations, enabling BT to
rapidly bring the benefits of a secure, simplified, scalable and highly
resilient infrastructure, reduced operating costs, improved productivity and
increased flexibility to its customers. This solution will also offer an
upgrade path for existing customers using BT's traditional hosted telephony
service, also based on Nortel equipment.
"BT's vision for the Digital
Networked Economy is transforming the way we meet our customers' needs," said
Mark Logan, general manager, VPN (Virtual Private Network) Products, BT Global
Services. "The Nortel hosted voice service is an important part of that
transformation."
"Along with our extensive managed local and wide-area
network delivery capability, Nortel's voice over IP solution will enhance BT's
ability to provide a seamless, cost-effective transition from traditional
office-based and hosted voice systems to a converged, managed IP environment,"
Logan said. "As a result, we expect to offer our customers a significant
competitive advantage through their ability to reap the cost and productivity
benefits that convergence offers."
"The Digital Networked Economy has
the power to change the way businesses act and interact with each other,
employees and customers," said Mark Weeks, general manager, BT account team,
Nortel. "We take our responsibility for delivering a part of that future
benefit very seriously."
"We have worked with BT for more than 15
years, focusing on delivering excellence in voice, data and multimedia
communications solutions to its customer base," Weeks said. "This next
generation platform takes our relationship to a new level, increasing the
reach, flexibility, scale and reliability of the solutions BT can offer its
corporate customers."
Nortel ranked number one in the global markets
for service provider softswitches and gateways for the entire year of 2004 and
for the first quarter of 2005, according to Synergy Research
