broadband: Swansea gets broadband
Swansea makes the next move along
the broadband highway when the citys exchange is switched on to
symmetrical broadband services (SDSL) on April 24. Swansea follows Bridgend,
Cardiff Central, Newport, Roath and most recently Wrexham, as the next Welsh
exchanges to get the technology which, unlike asymmetric broadband (ADSL),
allows users to send as well as receive data at high speeds.
This makes
SDSL a more suitable form of broadband for small to medium sized businesses,
remote office workers and teleworkers. Swansea exchange serves just over 3,000
business customers. Another nearby exchange, Morriston is due to be upgraded
for SDSL on May 29 and Llanelli, Port Talbot and Neath on July 3, 31 and
September 18 respectively.
Andrew Davies, Minister for Economic
Development and Transport, and e-Minister at the Welsh Assembly Government
said: Improving access and increasing the use of broadband is one of the
key priorities of the Welsh Assembly Government. Wales now ranks above the UK
average in Broadband take-up levels, reflecting the success of our
multi-million pound Broadband Wales Programme.
The availability
of SDSL technology in Swansea will create substantial opportunities for both
business and home users, and supports the continued development of Swasnea as
an innovative and knowledge-based city. Ann Beynon, BT director Wales,
said: Broadband services are the foundation on which Wales will build a
true digital networked economy. SDSL takes the potential one step further than
ADSL broadband, which more and more people in Wales are now using, by offering
the same high transmission speeds in both directions. Its the
latest product of BTs massive commitment to building Broadband Britain.
It will be of particular benefit to the growing numbers of smaller businesses,
remote offices and teleworkers in Swansea, who need to send large files or
data.
The provision of SDSL by BT will underpin the Welsh Assembly
Government's thrust towards developing businesses that are knowledge based and
technology driven and which will bring with them greater prosperity for our
communities. BTs SDSL programme forms part of a firm commitment
from BT to answer the needs of the growing number of UK towns and cities that
require higher speed, business-class broadband services.
Swansea is one
of 500 exchanges UK-wide to be upgraded over a six month period starting this
month. The following phase of the roll-out programme will then commence in
August 2005, when a further 500 exchanges will be identified for SDSL
enablement. BT Wholesales SDSL products include BT IPstream Symmetric and
BT Datastream Symmetric. These products are sold on a wholesale basis to
service providers who then retail SDSL services to end users.
SDSL is
an ideal form of broadband connectivity for any business, remote office or
teleworker requiring equivalent upstream and downstream data rates for web
hosting, e-mails or to distribute large files. SDSL also supports a range of
applications such as Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to connect geographically
dispersed sites, as well as video conferencing and Voice over IP (VoIP). All
SDSL service are distance dependent.
