Wi-Fi from BT takes off at
Cork Airport

Wi-Fi from BT takes off at Cork
Airport (09/08/05)
Wireless Broadband for approx 2.5 million
commuters - BT today announced that it has won a contract to provide wireless
broadband (Wi-Fi) to commuters at Cork International Airport. Available in all
public areas throughout the airport, BT Wi-Fi offers competitively priced
wireless broadband to the millions of business and leisure travellers that pass
through the airport each year.
The Wi-Fi contract, which offers an
unrivalled global roaming network for national and international commuters,
reinforces BTs position as one of Irelands leading Wi-Fi providers.
The service will allow passengers to securely access the internet and corporate
systems at broadband speeds while waiting for flights. To access, commuters
simply need a Wi-Fi enabled device such as a PDA or WLAN card to insert into
their laptop.
Cork International Airport is increasing its
passenger capacity year on year and we know that commuters, whether travelling
for business or leisure, need internet access at broadband speeds,
commented Joe Gantly, Chairman, Cork International Airport. One of our
key requirements from our Wi-Fi provider was to be able to offer a service that
allowed commuters to roam global networks. BT brought the right partners
including Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and 02 UK to the table to offer this
service and we are delighted to be working with one of the worlds best
communications providers.
Anne OLeary, Corporate Sales
Director, BT Ireland added, BT understands the time demands on
international commuters and the often long waiting times at airports. Bringing
wireless broadband to these commuters allows them to stay in the loop while on
the move, whether its for work or pleasure. BT Openzone gives you the
flexibility to log on to the corporate network while out of the office, or
simply check the latest weather forecast for your holiday destination.
With over 250 BT Openzone wireless broadband hotspots available
throughout Ireland, and over 30,000 globally through roaming agreements with
other international providers including T-Mobile, Orange, Telecom Italia,
Telia-Sonera, it is easier than ever before for business travellers, residents
and tourists to access the internet whenever and wherever they want. The
hotspots are easily identified and can be found at a rapidly-expanding network
of locations, including airports, hotels, conference centres and
OBriens coffee shops nationwide.
Using BT Openzone
BT Openzone provides access to the Internet and the ability to get
secure and fast connection to corporate networks while working "on the pause"
away from the office. Users with a laptop and a Wireless LAN access card and
software can access data at speeds of up to 500 kbps (almost 10 times faster
than a standard 56K modem), enabling them to send and receive large quantities
of information at broadband speed. Users need to be within range of an Openzone
site (approx 50 metres) - zones will be badged with the BT Openzone
logo.
