British
Telecom South East first to reach 1 Million broadband
customers
BT today revealed that more than one million homes and
businesses in the South East have connected to its broadband services. The
region is the first in the UK, including London, to reach this trail-blazing
target. Just three months ago BT announced that it had hit five million
broadband users in the UK and 880,000 were in the South East. It signals
fantastic take-up of the popular product across the region with an
average of 40,000 new connections per month. Alison Ritchie, BTs chief
broadband officer, said: This is great news for the South East and the UK
as a whole. Broadband is now a genuinely mass market product. The nature of the
broadband debate has changed, with the focus moving away from availability and
much more towards the ways in which broadband can transform our lives at work
and at home. The UK is fast becoming a broadband nation and broadband has a key
role to play in the economy, enhancing competitiveness, driving up productivity
and promoting growth.
By the end of summer BTs £1.5
billion national investment programme will have finished in the South East when
the final exchanges are upgraded, bringing broadband potential to 99.9 per cent
of premises.
BTs South East regional director Patricia Vaz said:
Its a true indication of the way this region has embraced and
realised the power of broadband that here in the South East we are the first to
hit the one million milestone.
People are literally transforming
the way they work, play and learn with the help of this technology. Rural
businesses are able to compete on a world stage, remote learning is possible
and tiny toddlers to silver surfers are really reaping the benefits.
Its an exciting time and while we celebrate today we will continue
to work with public and private sector organisations to look for ways broadband
can be experienced by all no matter where they may be.
Pam
Alexander, South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) chief executive, said:
I am delighted that 99.8 per cent of the South East now has access to
broadband and that one million customers are now connected.
These
technologies are crucial to the future prosperity and quality of life of people
across the South East. They can help people into work, enable those in work to
advance, and bring new opportunities for efficiency and innovation to business
as well as offering learning opportunities and new approaches to leisure and
house-hold management.
The milestone of one million adsl
broadband lines in the region is clearly a very positive indication that
significant progress has been made towards widespread take-up of broadband in
homes and businesses across the South East. We are working hard to encourage
this to go faster and further across all the 3.8million households of the South
East."
