18Mb UK broadband speed record
(02/09/05)
Be, the UKs newest broadband provider, broke the speed
record yesterday when their first customer, Stefan, connected to the Internet
in Clerkenwell with a download speed of 18.5 meg.
I didnt
think it would make that much difference, but its actually really
excellent. After 20 minutes, I was utterly sold said Stefan.
Be is
the first Internet service provider in the UK to take advantage of ADSL2+
technology. Bes 24 meg products give customers up to 24 meg downstream
speed and up to 1 meg upstream speed, depending on their distance from the
local exchange.
Be was set up with a very simple goal: to provide
the best possible broadband products that technology will allow, said
Dana Pressman, Managing Director of Be. Establishing this first
connection is an important achievement for the team and our first step towards
Bes full launch this autumn.
Be has built a completely new
network allowing it to deliver a very high quality product at an exceedingly
competitive price. Yesterday, Be announced the start of their service with a
call for Londoners to sign-up for pilot membership. Pilot members will enjoy
exclusive access to Bes ultra-fast broadband service for just £20
per month for the life of their membership with Be, but will pay nothing
until October 2005.
To become a pilot Be member, you simply need a BT
telephone line that can be connected to a telephone exchange at which Be has
installed their equipment. Registration is available now at BeThere.co.uk/pilot
About Be
Be Un limited (Be) is the
UKs new high-speed broadband Internet service provider (ISP). The company

incumbents (British Telecom in the case of the UK market) last mile
access infrastructure.
Be is run by a team of experts with extensive
experience in the broadband and systems fields. The core team includes Boris
Ivanovic (Founder and Director), who came from Bostream, the largest Swedish
DSL operator after Telia (the incumbent) prior to being sold to their largest
competitor and Dana Pressman (Managing Director), who has long experience in
managing high growth system development organisations with both Oracle and
